The Benefits Of ‘Hybrid Cloud’

Moving to the cloud can be perfectly adequate for some types of apps and organizations because it is easier to use and more cost-effective. As a startup, that is the right thing to do, but is it the case for larger organizations? Is it doable when a lot of investment has been made around a range of tailored and internal applications throughout the years? Sometimes, the answer is likely ‘no’, because it is neither possible nor cost-effective to do so.

This being said, cloud applications are not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ applications and moving one’s structure to cloud requires a whole new set of skills and working styles. Furthermore, organizations need to be aware that cloud providers lock-in is higher that IT vendors lock-in, which reduces the flexibility of moving from one provider to the other. Thus, it is believed that Hybrid is the future.

What is hybrid cloud?

There are so many definitions to hybrid cloud. Some define it as the combination of private and public cloud; others see it as an on-site environment towards one or many public clouds; while some call it Multicloud. Basically, hybrid allows all use cases that include a cloud technology (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS).

Benefits of hybrid cloud

  • Flexibility: Hybrid cloud provides a smooth response to the needs of your organization and to the IT resources requested. We even talk about extensibility in this context, since the use of public cloud considerably improves the infrastructure extension capacity. The hybrid cloud enables you to move resources and workloads from on-premise to the cloud and vice versa.
  • Cost-effectiveness and budget-mastering: When we talk about hybrid cloud we talk about the economy of scales due to resources used in public cloud model. Additionally, in general, utilizing cloud resources can allow you to eliminate the need to buy local resources and instead utilize pay-as-you-go cloud services.
  • Security: Thanks to private cloud, hybrid is perfectly secure when it comes to sensitive data. Furthermore, it meets the legal requirements for data storage when needed.

Although it seems like an attractive alternative, one should weight the pros and cons before making the step towards the hybrid cloud.
